Om Mani Padme Hum Mantra Pendant in Lavender

Description

This ornate pendant is actually a tiny prayer scroll, tightly hand-rolled from lotus lavender vintage (1970's) craft paper and permanently sealed with a parchment Tibetan Om. Inside the pendant, the mantra "Om mani padme hum" is written repeatedly in ancient Sanskrit. You can see the writing continued on the outside, creating beautiful brown patterns on the surface. The scroll is bound with brown satin thread and edged with gold leaf for truly exquisite detail. Copper wire wrap completes this little work of art, with a 6 mm loop on top. This pendant is 100% handmade by me, and one of a kind.

The rhythmic syllables of this mantra, when written or recited in repetition, bring a wonderful feeling of peace and meditation. The mantra is repeated approximately 20 times inside the little scroll. The basic English translation of this mantra is "Praise to the Jewel in the Lotus," however the meaning and significance of the six Tibetan syllables have been interpreted in a variety of ways. One common interpretation is that each syllable corresponds to one of the six realms of existence and purifies the vice associated with that realm:

"Om" purifies bliss and pride
"Ma" purifies jealousy and need for entertainment
"Ni" purifies passion and desire
"Pad" purifies ignorance and prejudice
"Me" purifies poverty and possessiveness
"Hum" purifies aggression and hatred

This would be an excellent focal charm to add to a necklace or mala, which are beaded rosaries used to help count while reciting mantra.

The pendant measures 1.6 inches (40 mm) in length including the top loop, and 8 mm wide.

This scroll does not open; it is sealed forever with its magic inside. The pendant is varnished, making it water resistant, but not water proof-- meaning I wouldn't go scuba diving with it, but getting caught in a light rainstorm shouldn't hurt it any.
